Typhoon Hagupit knocked out power and flattened houses as it pummeled the eastern and central Philippines overnight, leaving millions of people in darkness amid heavy rains and howling winds, officials said. Communication was also cut off in some of the affected areas as Hagupit slammed into the coastal town of Dolores in Eastern Samar province on Saturday evening, toppling trees and ripping off rooftops. There were no early reports of casualties, but authorities said they were still gathering information on the ground. EPA/FRANCIS R. MALASIG
